Welcome to techSteps
School districts use techSteps to develop K-8 student technology literacy in an integrated, 21st
century context. techSteps includes:
The K-8 Technology Literacy Framework
Built on the National Education Technology Standards for Students (NETS*S) and the work of the
Partnership for 21st Century Skills, the techSteps district framework provides a robust set of K-8 technology
literacy standards. These standards are organized under the headings:
- Technology Concepts
- Multimedia, Creativity, and Information Design
- Data and Data Visualization
- Research, Collaboration, and Problem Solving
- Digital Citizenship
- Technical Operations
The K-8 Technology Literacy Curriculum
The techSteps curriculum includes a set of electronic activity books for each grade level. Using these
guides, students are launched into real world applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet
Explorer. Here they learn new technology skills as they work through meaningful Math, Science, Language Arts, and
Social Studies activities. Authentic assessment is possible because students are building their own information
products using real-world software applications.
Assessment and Reporting
Assessment and reporting options are available to meet teacher and district needs. For
example, each learning activity includes an assessment rubric tied to the technology literacy standards. This makes it
easy for teachers to track student progress. Optionally, districts may implement our assessment benchmarks at Grade 5 and
Grade 8. Data gathered through authentic assessment is quickly turned into detailed reports that can be used to meet
NCLB requirements.
